The Dallas Mavericks had an impressive run to the NBA Finals and despite coming up short, they will head into the offseason feeling great about their situation. They have the pieces in place to continue to build off their run next season. However, they have to retain their key players like Derrick Jones Jr. and use the draft and free agency to improve the roster.

Unfortunately, the Mavericks don't have a first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. The only selection they have is the last pick of the draft, the No. 58 pick. Yet, they still have their eyes on one of the most fascinating prospects in the draft: a young man named Bronny James.

Draft insider Jonathan Givony reported that Bronny James' agent Rich Paul said that the Mavericks are among the teams interested in the USC product.

Mavericks News: Dallas Interested in Bronny James

Paul's remarks to Givony were fascinating. You just don't see agents being this transparent about their clients heading into the draft. However, Bronny is a special case.

LeBron James has long expressed his desire to have his son Bronny on the same team as him. Therefore, it was widely expected that Bronny would end up with the Los Angeles Lakers. Plus, he only worked out for the Lakers and the Phoenix Suns, signaling that he will likely be drafted or signed by one of these teams.

Yet, Dallas being interested in Bronny almost guarantees that he will be drafted. On the off chance that the Suns and the Lakers pass, the Mavericks, with the last pick in the draft, will likely select him. And that wouldn't be the worst thing.

The No. 58 pick in the draft rarely becomes a good NBA player. It is almost always a flyer on a low-probability prospect. Bronny would be no different.

On the surface, Bronny James makes some sense for the Mavericks. He plays off-ball, and can shoot and defend. He is the type of three-and-D guard who could thrive next to Luka Doncic.

For that to actualize, however, Bronny needs to develop significantly. Whether a championship contender like the Mavericks is the best place for him to do that is another question.
