Mike McCarthy Gives Infuriating Dalvin Cook Update Heading Into Week 5
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys' struggles running the ball have been well-documented. The team is currently dead last in the NFL in rushing yards. They average 3.5 yards per carry and only have two rushing touchdowns in four games.
Everyone except for Cowboys management and coaching staff recognizes that there is a problem here. Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott haven't been able to give Dallas what they hoped for before the season.
Despite all of this, the Cowboys haven't elevated Dalvin Cook from the practice squad, much to the frustration of the fanbase. Mike McCarthy's latest remarks on 105.3 The Fan are deeply infuriating.
Cowboys News: Mike McCarthy's RB Comments Make No Sense
According to The Athletic's Jon Machota, McCarthy said that Cook took some reps on Thursday and that he is moving forward. However, they aren't willing to elevate him because they don't want to reduce Zeke and Dowdle's touches.
"I think Rico (Dowdle) and (Ezekiel Elliott) they haven't been given a lot of opportunities too, so it isn't like they haven't done anything to warrant their opportunities decreasing right now. It's a great place to be. It gives us excellent depth. That's a hell of a situation to be in."
- Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy
Calling the Cowboys' current RB room "a hell of a situation" is objectively ridiculous. Suggesting that they don't deserve "their opportunities decreasing" right now, is equally incomprehensible.
Elliott and Dowdle are known commodities. Zeke was equally ineffective last year and Dowdle has never shown enough to be a trusted RB1. Hoping that they will magically be better than they have been in the last couple of years is ludicrous.
Pretending that a problem doesn't exist doesn't make the problem go away. Cook may not be the panacea but at least the acknowledgment of the problem would be a good start.
