The Dallas Cowboys are coming off a disastrous Week 2 loss against the New Orleans Saints where they were completely overmatched in all aspects of football. Perhaps the worst performance of all came on the run defense as Saints RB Alvin Kamara cruised to one of the best games of his career without facing much resistance.

One of the biggest culprits of that poor showing was defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. The interior defender who was acquired by a trade in the offseason, was a no-show in his 19 defensive snaps on Sunday. He finished the game without any stats and a PFF grade of 25.8.

To make matters worse, his being on the active game-day roster means that the Cowboys now give up their sixth-round pick to the Giants. According to Cowboys insider Todd Archer, now that Phillips was on the 46-man roster for two games, the conditions of the preseason trade have been met, costing Dallas a sixth-rounder in the 2026 NFL Draft.

NFL Trade News: Preseason Cowboys Deals Finalized

In the grand scheme of things, this is not that big of a deal. However, it points to a larger problem with the Cowboys' management. They waited until mid-August to address a position of need. The hole in the interior was obvious the moment Johnathan Hankins left in free agency but Jerry Jones waited until a few weeks before the start of the season to make this terrible Jordan Phillips trade.

Another trade that was just finalized was the deal that sent tight end Peyton Hendershot to the Kansas City Chiefs. The conditional seventh-round pick the Chiefs owed Dallas is never going to come to fruition as Kansas City just released the former Cowboy before he was able to appear in any games.
