As the Texas Rangers prepare to battle the Houston Astros in the ALCS, they're going to need all the help they can get if they want to take down the reigning World Series champs.

Fortunately, the Rangers are getting one of their best players back in time for this crucial postseason showdown.

Max Scherzer Injury Update

Texas announced on Sunday morning that star pitcher Max Scherzer has been added to the team's postseason roster for the ALCS, which is scheduled to kick off on Sunday night in Houston.

This is great news for the Rangers, who did not have Scherzer available for the first two rounds of the playoffs. That didn't stop them from sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles, but now they'll face their toughest test yet.

Scherzer, 39, has not pitched for Texas in over a month. He last appeared for the club on Sept. 12, when he suffered a right shoulder injury during his start against the Toronto Blue Jays. The injury prevented Scherzer from pitching in the rest of the regular season as well as the AL Wild Card Round and AL Division Series, but he appears to have recovered and is now available to pitch in the ALCS.

It's unclear what capacity that will be in, however. If Scherzer's not able to handle a starter's workload, Bruce Bochy may opt to use him out of the bullpen in this series. He could also use Scherzer as an opener and let him pitch a few innings before going to his relievers.

Scherzer was pitching well for Texas before going down, logging a 4-2 record with a 3.20 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP and a 10.6 K/9 in 8 starts for the Rangers after coming over from the New York Mets at the trade deadline. Given Scherzer's extensive postseason experience, he's someone that Rangers fans definitely hope to see on the mound at some point in this series, even if only in relief.
