The Dallas Cowboys have plenty of important questions heading into free agency as they look to strengthen their roster for a Super Bowl run next season. One of those is whether they will re-sign veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Acquired by the Cowboys in the 2023 offseason via trade, Gilmore had a very solid season in Dallas, playing every game and grading as the second-best corner in the Cowboys' backfield, according to PFF. However, the 33-year-old Pro Bowler is hitting free agency and he might be out of the Cowboys' price range after that excellent season.

Fortunately for Dallas, however, there is a similarly talented veteran corner who is hitting the open market.

Veteran CB Patrick Peterson is Hitting Free Agency

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers released eight-time Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson, who was entering the final season of his two-year contract. This move saves the Steelers $6.85 million in cap space but they are losing a competent playmaker in the backfield.

Peterson is not the ballhawk he once was as one of the best defensive players in football, but he is still a versatile veteran whose experience could be valuable on contenders like the Cowboys.

The former LSU standout played every game with the Steelers last season, finishing with 11 passes defended, two interceptions, and 42 tackles. He allowed 59.4 completion percentage when targeted in the passing game.

The 33-year-old likely can't replicate Gilmore's production at this stage of his career. But, he will be cheaper and on a shorter-term deal. That could be worth a flyer considering the tight salary cap situation the Cowboys will be in going forward.
