Trey Lance Gives First Comments on Facing 49ers After Trade
By Tyler Maher
Last week, Cowboys fans got to see a familiar face when Ezekiel Elliott returned to Dallas as a member of the New England Patriots.
This week, the shoe is on the other foot as Trey Lance returns to San Francisco for the first time since being traded to the Cowboys, where he is currently the backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott.
Ahead of this week's trip to San Fran to face the 49ers, Lance opened up about the trade and his current mindset.

For his part, Lance is trying to stay in the moment and the task at hand rather than dwelling too much on the past. “I always try to be present in my focus,’’ Lance said. “For an athlete that helps the most."
He did admit that he still has friends on the 49ers, however, and that he stays in contact with some of his former teammates. “I’ve talked to those guys," he said. "Keep in touch with them every once in a while. Some are my real good friends."
That said, Lance reiterated that he has moved on and is excited to be in Dallas for the next chapter of his career, saying "from a football standpoint I’ve turned the page and am excited to be here.’’
Lance's career has been quite the rollercoaster. San Francisco drafted him third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, expecting him to be its next franchise quarterback. He appeared ready to step into that role in 2022 before suffering a season-ending injury in Week 2. Brock Purdy emerged as the team's new quarterback in his absence, making Lance expendable. The 49ers traded him to the Cowboys towards the end of preseason in late August, moving on from him after only 8 career games (4 starts).
Lance has yet to see game action for Dallas, so he's unlikely to take the field on Sunday unless Prescott gets hurt or has a terrible game. Still, it must be weird for him to go back to a place where he probably envisioned spending a large portion of his career.
