What Tua Tagovailoa's Contract Means for the Cowboys and Dak Prescott
There seems to be no urgency in the building for the Dallas Cowboys. Even though they had another disappointing ending to the 2023 season, they failed to make any meaningful additions.
Also, they failed to extend any of their key players like Dak Prescott this offseason. They've watched, as multiple quarterbacks received massive deals over the last few months.
On Friday, Miami's Tua Tagovailoa got a long-term deal, pushing the goalpost back for Prescott.
NFL News: Miami Dolphins Signs Tua Tagovailoa To Four-Year Extension
Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Dolphins and Tagovailoa agreed to terms on a four-year, $212.4 million extension. He's now slated to make $53.1 million per year, which is third among quarterbacks.
Joe Burrow ($55 million), Trevor Lawrence ($55 million), Tagovailoa ($53.1 million), Jared Goff ($53 million), Justin Herbert ($52.5 million), Lamar Jackson ($52 million), and Jalen Hurts ($51 million) are the highest paid quarterbacks in the league.
Tagovailoa getting that deal certainly raises the price for Prescott. Last season was the first time Tagovailoa played in all 17 games. His play has been elevated by head coach Mike McDaniel and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Meanwhile, Prescott has been one of the best signal callers in the game for some time now. Across eight seasons as a starter, Prescott has six years with a winning record and has put up some massive numbers.
He's 73-41 as a starter with 29,459 passing yards, 202 passing touchdowns, and 74 interceptions. The QB market will continue to rise, and Prescott could be touching $60 million annually by the time he gets his deal.
Green Bay's Jordan Love is also going to ink an extension soon. The price is only going up and the Cowboys are just dragging their feet. And in the future, they'll have to pay for it.
If not, someone will when he touches free agency next March. And the 30-year-old isn't afraid of playing somewhere else.
