Rangers' unlikely hero finally gives fans something to cheer for amid mediocre season

The Texas Rangers have been in a hitting slump all year, but there's one unlikely hero on their radar now.

Texas Rangers fans have been scratching their heads all season long, as the Rangers have not been able to get a clear advantage in what's been a weak AL West conference all season long. There hasn't been a dominant powerhouse like in previous years, but Rangers fans at least have something to look forward to now, and it's one name they would've never thought would rise to the occasion.

That's Rangers utility player Ezequiel Duran, who has made a strong case to make the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, and that's something no fan could've predicted even if they had 100 bold predictions to make.

Duran has been one of the most underrated players in the American League, batting .293 this season with an .804 OPS, 35 RBIs, and 4 home runs. It's not the sexiest of stats, but it shows how Duran has been taking advantage of what's been a dull season for the Rangers thus far. He's also earned a nickname that will hopefully stick around for a while.

Ezequiel Duran is giving the Rangers the energy they've badly needed all season

Duran has proven to be a jack-of-all-trades, playing five different positions this season. It's not often you see players adjust to that in a single season, and the nickname "The Solution" is about as good as it gets, as he's playing the best ball of his career.

Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News points out perfectly why Duran may be a dark horse candidate to make the All-Star Game, but it makes all the sense in the world.

"As of Wednesday, he was second among those listed at the position to Cleveland rookie Travis Bazzana by six points. And nobody else is close to them. Also, Duran entered the day with a higher WAR (1.7) than Bazzana (1.4). If he’s not the starter, he should have an excellent chance as the players’ choice."

This comes as star shortstop Corey Seager has been going through arguably the worst slump of his career, and it's frustrating knowing that this division can be taken by anyone in a flash. Of course, nothing is automatic in baseball, but if the Rangers' offense were to click more often, they would no doubt be at a clear advantage in a weak AL West.

Currently, the Rangers are breathing down the Mariners' necks at second in the division, but it's been ugly all season long.

Luckily, Duran has been the one to step up. He can play in the outfield or the infield, and heck, why not let him pitch now and then?

After showing some promise early in his career, Duran suffered a major slump in 2024, but to put it lightly, Duran is back, and he's playing some of the best baseball of his career. Rangers manager Skip Schumaker has given Duran his flowers for wearing different hats. But if the Rangers are going to have any chance at a second-half season run, Skip will look for his breakout utility player to do damage.
