Star RB Predicted to be Traded is Perfect Cowboys Target This Offseason
By Cem Yolbulan
With the first weekend of NFL playoffs officially behind us, it's offseason time for most of the league. The Dallas Cowboys finally made their decision to move on from Mike McCarthy after five seasons and their top priority is to find a replacement as soon as possible. With one of the most desirable openings on the market, the Cowboys should be able to hire a high-level head coach.
That is, however, not the only big move Jerry Jones has to make this offseason. The Cowboys proved during the 2024 season that their roster is nowhere near Super Bowl level. Injuries will be blamed but this team was not making a deep postseason run regardless of health and availability. Therefore, significant roster upgrades are necessary in the offseason.
The running back rotation should be near the top of the list of needs. The Cowboys had arguably the worst rushing offense in the league, finishing with 4.0 yards per carry and a league-worst six rushing TDs. On Pro Football Focus, they received the second-worst grade behind the Raiders.
Rico Dowdle is hitting free agency and after a 1,000+ season, the Cowboys will be inclined to re-sign him. Another option would be trading for a star running back. ESPN's Ben Solak predicted that the New York Jets will listen to offers for Breece Hall in the offseason.
"While receiver Garrett Wilson is the buzzy trade candidate these days, the Jets will end up trading their other young offensive star, Breece Hall."
- Ben Solak, ESPN
Hall is entering his fourth season in the NFL and has one year left on his contract. He has shown that he will be a high-level RB for a long time. At the same time, the Jets are not going anywhere and will potentially pivot to a rebuild, depending on what happens with Aaron Rodgers. Instead of losing Hall for nothing next year, they will presumably be interested in moving him for draft capital.
The 23-year-old playmaker had 876 rushing yards in 2024 while adding 483 yards in the passing game and scoring a total of eight touchdowns. He was one of the lone bright spots for a dysfunctional Jets offense. He would immediately be a major upgrade on Dowdle and be a boost for the Cowboys offense.
