The Dallas Cowboys were fortunate to come away with a 40-37 overtime victory against the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon. Even with the win, though, Cowboys fans aren't enjoying a typical Victory Monday as there are some real issues facing this team entering Week 3.

Perhaps the most glaring problem Dallas has at this time was clear on Sunday. Giants veteran QB Russell Wilson picked apart the Cowboys' secondary to the tune of 450 yards and three touchdown passes. Defending the deep ball, in particular, was a major issue for Dallas, as evidenced by the nine receptions for 167 yards and a TD by Malik Nabers and the eight receptions for 142 yards and a TD by Wan'Dale Robinson.

That was enough for one former Cowboys defensive back to react to what he was seeing in real-time. After what fans have seen thus far, it shouldn't be surprising that they are already pleading for Stephon Gilmore to return to the franchise to help this defensive unit.

Ex-Cowboys DB Stephon Gilmore Clearly Still Has Interest in Dallas

Fortunately, an ill-advised interception in overtime set Dallas up for what was the game-winning FG, but even the most optimistic of fans know they cannot count on outcomes like this moving forward. This is why fans are clamoring for the front office to bring Gilmore back into the fold after spending the 2023 season as a member of the Cowboys' defense.

With fans already fed up with some of the current starters in the secondary, especially the way one player who underachieved throughout Week 2 celebrated on his way back to the locker room, the desire for a proven veteran with a team-first mentality, such as Gilmore, makes a lot of sense.

After spending this past season as a member of the Minnesota Vikings, where he performed admirably by recording 56 tackles, one interception, and nine passes defended in 15 starts, Gilmore remains unsigned as of this writing.

If Jerry Jones and the Cowboys were to reach out to Gilmore to gauge his interest in returning to the franchise, it would provide the veteran the opportunity to reunite with a former high school and college teammate in Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney attempted to recruit Gilmore to join him with the Carolina Panthers last season, something that clearly didn't transpire, given the defensive back's decision to sign with the Vikings. Now that Clowney is signed on with the Cowboys, however, perhaps he will have more success this time around with any recruitment efforts.

One thing is for certain: fans in Dallas would certainly be behind the idea.
