The Wizards have an Anthony Davis problem that Mavericks fans are laughing at

The Dallas Mavericks fans knew from Day 1 that the Anthony Davis trade was the worst idea in the world. Now, the Washington Wizards are picking up the leftovers of the Davis trade, and they have a monumental decision to make this summer for the 33-year-old NBA champion.

ESPN's Bobby Marks wrote an "NBA extension watch" article and has Davis as one of his guys who's eligible to sign an extension come August 6th. The Wizards have chosen to go with Trae Young and Davis to help rebuild their young squad, which will most likely one day be led by BYU's AJ Dybantsa. What Marks says in the article is about as funny as Mavs fans had hoped.

"There is no sense of urgency considering that Davis is extension eligible through June 30 and has not yet played a game with the Wizards. It is hard to see the Wizards showing urgency to extend Davis for the max considering his age and lack of availability. That does not mean an extension is unlikely, but it would come on Washington's terms."

Wizards have an Anthony Davis contract dilemma that Mavs fans already knew

Signing Davis to a contract extension was the concern Mavs fans had for a while. The Wizards have that to worry about now, as Marks adds that Davis has failed to reach 60 games in five of the past six seasons.

A four-year, $275 million extension was going to be a terrible idea for the Mavs, and now the Wizards have those leftovers to worry about. At one point, it would've made sense, as Davis used to be a top 10 player in the league, but those days are far from over.

Even if Davis was still on the Mavericks, considering the moves he's made, new team president Masai Ujiri probably wouldn't want to deal with Davis anyway.

The Mavericks don't have Davis to worry about anymore, but it's not like he asked to be the laughingstock of the Doncic trade. He didn't ask Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka to trade Davis in the middle of the night for one of the best playmakers in basketball.

Davis never asked for the boos or the "Fire Nico" chants, but Mavs fans knew to be as sensitive to him as possible. Even though he only played 29 regular-season games with Dallas, Mavs fans already knew of his durability concerns, and by the time the Mavs traded him before this year's deadline, Mavs fans were numb to Davis' absence.

If Wizards and Mavs fans had something in common, it's the fact that both teams are starting over, and the Mavs are in a better place with Cooper Flagg about to get a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The Wizards have been starting over, but they have a base with Young, Davis and potentially Dybantsa about to take over.
