Trey Lance Makes 1st Comments on Possible Cowboys Start in Week 18
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys are wrapping up the 2024 regular season on Sunday when they host the Washington Commanders in Week 18. After the Commanders clinched a playoff spot last week, neither team has much to play for in this meaningless game. The Cowboys have still largely played competitive football, save for the blowout loss to the Eagles last week, because of the ownership mandate to try to win as many games as they can even after getting eliminated from the playoffs.
As a result, Dallas started Cooper Rush in the last eight weeks after Dak Prescott's injury because the team thought the veteran QB gave them a better chance to win.
Some have speculated that could change in the final week of the season and that the team could give Trey Lance a chance to start. Still waiting to make his first Cowboys start, Lance revealed his excitement about this potential opportunity. Per Cowboys insider Calvin Watkins, the third-stringer said he wants to play like he does every week but added that he wasn't told whether he would start on Sunday.
Cowboys News: Trey Lance Doesn't Know Who is Starting in Week 18
How few chances Lance got as a Cowboys have been very surprising. Even in a season where Prescott was injured and Dallas was out of playoff contention early, Lance struggled to get on the field. Considering how the Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick for him in the 2023 offseason, this is a major swing and a miss by the front office.
It is highly unlikely that Lance will return to Dallas after the Cowboys declined his fifth-year option. The former third-overall pick would ideally want to be in a situation where he can be the backup QB rather than a third-stringer behind Cooper Rush.
Rush has performed admirably in Prescott's absence, leading the Cowboys to a 4-4 record in his starts. Yet, it probably makes more sense for the Cowboys to take a final look at Lance against the Commanders to make a final decision.
