Two Former Cowboys RBs Named Favorites to Land Dallas Coaching Gig
The Dallas Cowboys' 2024 season was a massive disaster. The Cowboys went 7-10 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
After the season ended, there was speculation about Mike McCarthy's future with the team. On Jan. 13, it was reported that McCarthy and the Cowboys decided to go in different directions for the 2025 season. Rumors have emerged that McCarthy didn't like Dallas' succession plan, which reportedly had Jason Witten as McCarthy's successor.
With the HC search underway, Deion Sanders is a name that has been floated as a serious contender to become the new coach. While these conversations are happening, Nick Harris of the StarTelegram believes fans should keep an eye on DeMarco Murray or Tashard Choice to become the next running back.
Cowboys Rumors: Tashard Choice and Demarco Murray Are Two Names To Watch for RB Coach
Harris believes that Jerry Jones would love to bring in either Murray or Choice to the coaching staff in 2025.
Murray was a third-round pick by the Cowboys in 2011, playing with Dallas from 2011-2014. During his tenure with the Cowboys, he had 4,526 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. Although he doesn't have NFL coaching experience, he was the RB coach at the University of Arizona in 2019 before taking that same role at the University of Oklahoma in 2020. He's still there as we speak.
Meanwhile, Choice was a fourth-round pick in 2008 by the Cowboys, suiting up for them from 2008-2011. In 54 career games with Dallas, he had 1,139 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Choice was a coaching intern for the Cowboys in 2016 before jumping into the college ranks. He's had stops at North Texas and Georgia Tech. Choice has been the RB coach for the University of Texas since 2022.
One common theme that appears to be happening in the Lone Star State is the potential return of former coaches.
Sanders and Witten are two former players who have been linked to Dallas. Murray and Choice now join them as new potential coaches for the Cowboys in 2025.
We'll have to see how the next couple of weeks go in this coaching search, but Jones has his eyes on a couple of former Cowboys.
