There isn't any debating that the story of the Dallas Cowboys' offseason is the addition of receiver George Pickens. It is a splashy move that lends itself to hope that this team will turn the corner after a miserable 2024 season. However, Pickens isn't the only pass catcher having a great offseason, with another Cowboys target quietly climbing his way up the depth chart.

Brevyn Spann-Ford was signed by Dallas as an undrafted free agent after the 2024 NFL Draft. The playmaker has taken a leap this offseason, earning starting reps in OTAs and minicamp.

While Jake Ferguson is an established starter, this change is noteworthy. Spann-Ford offers a 6'7 frame that is a walking mismatch if the tight end can continue to develop. The last time Dak Prescott was healthy, Ferguson finished the season with 761 receiving yards and 5 touchdown grabs. This is great production and demands that Spann-Ford has an incredible summer and preseason for any serious changes to be considered.

Spann-Ford Would Give the Cowboys' Offense the Ultimate Mismatch

With that said, the second-year tight end has done enough to push his name into consideration not only for this year's roster but for a meaningful role. The praise that the Dallas head coach offered the second-year player isn't typical for a player who has been a fringe roster piece. Now, it appears Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker should consider themselves put on notice when it comes to the current depth chart.

It is fun to consider an offense that could put the 6'7 frame of Spann-Ford on the field along with Pickens and CeeDee Lamb. Throw in the blazing speed of Turpin in a utility role, and the Cowboys unquestionably would have fun wrinkles to throw at any defense as long as Dak Prescott remains at the controls.

For Dallas, this is a much-needed positive development as the team heads into a pivotal 2025 season. The franchise is dealing with a loaded division with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders having valid reasons to believe their recent dominance will continue. No question, the Cowboys have tough work ahead, and having a surprise breakout from Spann-Ford would make that difficult path just a bit easier.
