Cowboys: And With The Fourth Pick

facebooktwitterreddit

With the NFL combine upon us, it is time to speculate when we hear, “and with the fourth pick, the Dallas Cowboys…”

First, let’s assume Jerry Jones doesn’t trade down for the purpose of this exercise. As I have stated before, the best thing the Cowboys can do is try to trade down and scoop up some more picks. But, if there is no trade partner or Jerry Jones decides to stay put, let’s look at some of the realistic options the Dallas Cowboys have at the 4th pick.

If you read through NFL mock drafts posted on just about every website covering the NFL, the only real constant has been the number one pick of offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil to Tennessee. After that there seems to be some themes, but nothing really set in stone.

It looks like the Cleveland Browns will go quarterback at number 2. With Jared Goff’s stock dropping right now, it looks like Carson Wentz is the best option. After these no one knows anything.

The San Diego Chargers are the only team really in the top three that can throw some serious changes to the Dallas Cowboys’ draft plans. Maybe, not a lot, but some. So far mock drafts have the Chargers grabbing defensive end Joey Bosa from Ohio St, defensive end DeForest Buckner from Oregon, and cornerback Jalen Ramsey from Florida St. If Ramsey’s name sounds familiar he has been rumored to be at the top of the Dallas Cowboys big board (although with Jerry Jones as owner this could be a smokescreen).

That brings us to the Dallas Cowboys at number four. Sure, much of the media have pointed to Jalen Ramsey if he is still there, but there are some other interesting things that can happen and players that would be or could be available. With defensive end Randy Gregory being suspended then that means it is possible that either Bosa or Buckner (if they’re still available) could easily be the pick.

Oh, and there is always linebacker Myles Jack from UCLA. Decisions, decisions.

There are a few interesting names that have not been brought up to date. There is always potential workhorse running back Ezekiel Elliot from Ohio St., who could be just what the offense needs if starting quarterback Tony Romo does get injured again. But there are two other names people are not really talking about with the Cowboys. The first is Vernon Hargrave, the cornerback out of Florida, and the other is Noah Spence, the defensive end out of Eastern Kentucky (was Ohio St.).

First Noah has had some off the field issues. It is unsure where he is now, but after becoming banned by the Big 10 for failed drug tests and a public intoxication (which was dropped after community service), he fell off the radar once he landed in Eastern Kentucky.

After the Randy Gregory incident, the Cowboys may just avoid him altogether. He could drop, and might be worth a pickup if he makes it to the third round. So for now, we will assume he will drop, until all the homework is done on him at the combine.

Hargrave is the interesting player here. If the Cowboys are really set on picking a cornerback at number four, and the Chargers jump on Ramsey, then Hargrave would be the next guy. Hargrave is actually an outstanding cornerback and has better ball skills than Ramsey does. While he is a little on the smaller side, he plays with a chip on his shoulder and always seems to be around the ball, even if he is beat on the double move early in the route, Hargrave, might be the real CB target for the Cowboys.

So with the fourth pick in the NFL draft the Cowboys have quite a few options. Again, if I had to guess, I would think Jerry Jones will look to trade down and pick up more draft picks in the process. If they do in fact stay at number four, then my first guess would be defensive end, either Bosa or Buckner.

They will set the tone of the their draft if they look for help in the secondary or Jack. Some of this depends on free agency, and it will probably change a million times, but for now it is fun to think about who the Cowboys will pick at number four.
