Round 7, Pick 246: TE Eric Saubert, Drake

The final pick of the mock draft the Dallas Cowboys look to a small school player with potential to groom (Rico Gathers 2.0). Eric Saubert stands 6’5” 251 lbs.

The leading receiver for the Bulldogs the past two seasons, Saubert was used primarily as a receiver. His large catch radius and redzone awareness contributed to 17 touchdowns the past two seasons.

Admittedly his concentration isn’t always present and he’ll often get caught looking downfield and dropping catchable passes. He’s been known to make an amazing grab one moment and then make an easy drop the next.

He wasn’t asked to block often and when he did he didn’t look very good at it. The problem seemed to be technique and effort more than ability. Again, he’s pretty impressive physically so he should be able to dominate in his blocks.

Eric Saubert is a project player with good upside. He may not make the team in 2017 but he’s a great prospect to groom much like Rico Gathers last season.

More from Cowboys Draft

With Jason Witten the lock for #1, James Hanna, Rico Gathers and Geoff Swaim battling it out for No. 2 and No. 3, there won’t be a huge opportunity for any late-round TE. But Eric Saubert has high-end skills that translate well and could push the competition.
