Defensive Tackle

Welcome to this year’s installment of “Will the Cowboys find their 1 technique defensive tackle?”

Yes… if the Cowboys were drafting in the Top 10 of the draft. This draft is unusually top heavy at the defensive tackle position and seeing as the Cowboys don’t have a pick until No. 58, the Cowboys could either pick a DT on Day 2 or sign a free agent like Antwaun Woods or Caraun Reid.

With David Irving not playing this year, we lost the opportunity to have someone who could play that valuable 1 technique sport. Having a consistent 1 technique for this line would be a luxury but come back next year for another installment of “Will the Cowboys find their 1 technique defensive tackle?”

More from Cowboys Draft

Safety

Safety is more of a want than a need. Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods more than held their ground as the last line of defense and didn’t give up too many big plays.

Pro Football Reference slated the Cowboys as a top ten defense in yards per catch, touchdowns allowed, and percentage of touchdowns thrown when attempting to pass. The secondary was clearly good at preventing touchdowns and big plays even if other offense compiled lots of yardage.

This proves: this secondary needs to grow more under the tutelage of Kris Richard and adding a high profile member to this secondary, specifically at safety, could make this secondary truly special.

This safety class unfortunately doesn’t have blue chip prospects but that could lead to the signing of someone from the Pacific Northwest who asked Jason Garrett to “come and find [him].”

In all, this Cowboys team is very young and for once, there seems to be more reloading than rebuilding. Jason Garrett and his crew have a lot of work in front of them but the lack of holes to fill is certainly a bright sport for a team trying to reach the Conference Championship for the first time in 23 years.
