The Cowboys will select ONE receiver in the 3rd round, and that’s it…

Once again, this take isn’t hot but it limiting a position of need to one round can seem a bit risky. The next few weeks will tell us how much the Cowboys receiver room will turnover and as a result, the Cowboys may be losing more faces at receiver than initially anticipated.

Cooper and Gallup provided a nice duo down the stretch and having Cole Beasley as easy access in the slot helped extend drives. If Beasley were to leave, the safety valve we had would be lost and the expectation would be for Hurns, when healthy, to play in the slot. Cedric Wilson is also another name to throw for receivers in mix for the slot.

The Cowboys are getting thin at the position and competition is always welcome at a position like wide receiver. So why would the Cowboys feel compelled to use their second pick on a wide receiver in a fairly deep wide receiver class?

Plenty of receivers in this class tested extremely well on Saturday. Guys like Emmanuel Hall, Miles Boykin, Deebo Samuel, Darius Slayton, Gary Jennings, and even Dillon Mitchell tested extremely well causing their draft value to rise. The Cowboys might find themselves in a situation where if they wait too long, they might not find the right receiver. After all, it’s not about the team drafting the best player, it’s about the team finding the right fit at the position.

More from Cowboys Draft

Amari Cooper and Gallup are both solid route runners, Cole Beasley was a god at getting separation, and Cedric Wilson, when healthy and in college, was developing into a good route runner. Fortunately for the Cowboys, there are quite a few players that fit that profile but not that many have great college production.

For the Cowboys to get the most out of the wide receivers in this class, it might require them to invest early so they can find a crucial piece that will leave them security at the position for years to come. The Cowboys are a young team so the receiver they draft will get plenty of years with this team and quarter back. Let’s hope the Cowboys can make it count.

These “hot” takes were entirely based on combine numbers and not so much on film simply because the combine is the most trending thing right now. I encourage everyone to trust the film on players because they show their capabilities and detail their impact more than numbers on a spreadsheet.
