Round 7 – Wyatt Ray – Defensive End/Linebacker – Boston College

I kind of wanted to go defensive end or linebacker earlier, but there was too much value at other positions and a little too much reach in a fairly mediocre class. Without a sixth round pick at the moment, I thought looking for help in the seventh would be fairly important. Wyatt Ray went as early as the sixth in some drafts and dropped in others. Part of it is I think Ray might be a little bit of a tweener.

He might be more of a 3-4 outside linebacker, but shows just enough promise to think as part of a rotation he can fill in at defensive end and even at linebacker in a 4-3. He will have to work on his moves if he is to stay at defensive end or lose a little weight to be a permanent linebacker. However, he shows just enough that with a little work he could be solid as a pass rusher.

Like I said, he is not going to be your day one pass rusher, but as a project in the seventh, he could end up being a good pass rusher in a year or two. He plays the run well enough that he could find a home in the rotation at some point in his first season and should be one of the better rookie special teams players.

Other Names: Khalil Hodge, Markus Jones, Dre Greenlaw

Without a first round pick, well I guess we can call Amari Cooper the first round pick, the Dallas Cowboys may try to move around a little in the draft to acquire draft picks. Looking at the positions who they have brought in shows a pretty heavy focus on defense. I do think they will grab some depth on offense in the draft, I am not sure they view it the same way as we do.

More from Cowboys Draft

If the Cowboys do move around and pick up more picks don’t be surprised if they grab offensive line depth and possibly more defensive line help. Regardless of what the Cowboys do from this point onward in free agency it seems they are looking for boom or bust players with injury histories. This means any position is open for draft, but also depending on medical reports this could all change.

For now, enjoy the mock draft. This was rather difficult once we got into the fourth round due to the needs versus the depth of this draft. Let us know below what you think and as always, go Cowboys!
