Davante Davis, CB, Texas

Cornerback isn’t a need, but it is something the Cowboys may look to draft because of how Kris Richard likes his cornerbacks. He prefers long armed taller guys to play the position and Davis would fit that profile.

The common perception is that Big 12 defenses aren’t good because of the points and yards allowed. There is definitely some truth to this, but the offenses in the Big 12 are also really good. Davis has shown flashes that would make him desirable in a Kris Richard system.

As mentioned, he’s tall. Standing at a modest 6’2″ and 202 pounds, he impresses with some other traits as well. He’s extremely explosive and probably tested better on his agility than he shows on film. According to NFL.com, even though he ran a 4.57 40 yard dash, he jumped 37″ vertically, he jumped 10’5″ in the broad jump, and he ran an absurd 6.76 in the 3 cone drill.

Davis’s draft stock would be higher if he played man coverage better. He looks the part of a zone coverage corner because of his size and his agility. His backpedal is noticeably slow, and while he opens his hips nicely, he can get beat deep because of his backpedal.

Davis is a tool Richard can develop if selected later in the draft similar to how the Vikings picked up Holton Hill last year as an UDFA. These guys are longer cornerbacks who thrive in zone coverage. They also excel in tackling, which make them prime candidates to play on special teams. You really can’t go wrong with selecting Davis in the seventh round.
