Round Seven – Pick 238 – Carson Green – Offensive Tackle/Guard – Texas A&M

Last season injuries ravaged the offensive line, however, the Cowboys feel Tyron Smith and La’el Collins are good to go this season. This doesn’t mean the Cowboys should now pass up adding offensive line depth. They certainly could dip into the offensive line well earlier, but the way the draft fell and trading up, other positions were just better value.

More from Cowboys Draft

Carson Green was an offensive tackle at Texas A&M but may better fit as a guard with some spot duty at tackle at the next level. He packs a powerful first punch. He takes good angles and uses his body to turn defenders away pretty easily. Rarely does he reach for a blitzer and stay patient and reacts well.

Green will need work handling speed better at the next level. He does better as a run blocker than a pass blocker, and a move inside could help even this out some. He lumbers a little to get to the second level and his range isn’t ready for full-time duties. He could use a little better weight distribution so his balance stays a little more consistent.

First, let’s make a bold prediction for the Cowboys draft, if both corners are gone that they like at 10, they could trade down to around fifteen with the Patriots and still try to come back up at the end of the first. I believe they will pass on an offensive tackle to trade down.

So for the wrap-up, the Cowboys have a lot of needs on defense and will need to fill much of them in the draft. There is still the May 1st “free agency” which means players signed then won’t count against the compensatory pick calculations for next year, something the Cowboys hold valuable. Should they miss out on one of the top corners, they could call Casey Hayward as a one year stop-gap.

With only a few days left to go, we throw out a final mock. Pick ten will set the tone for the rest of the draft, but I believe the Cowboys will move around at points of the draft. They seem to want a corner, linebacker, and safety, but that shouldn’t rule out defensive tackle or defensive end should the right player fall. Offensive will always be popular among fans, and the Cowboys love to load up that side of the ball, so outside of right guard and quarterback, all bets are off.
