NFL Draft 2021: Dallas Cowboys pick Chauncey Golston at 84 – What he brings
The Dallas Cowboys add another defensive lineman at 84 with Chauncey Golston, an edge with a high motor and sure tackling.
The Dallas Cowboys again went to the defensive line instead of addressing safety, and this time grabbed Chauncey Golston, a defensive end out of Iowa. Golston is another high motor player that will never give up on a play and simply loves to tackle people. He adds depth to defensive end that was a little thin after free agency. Golston is solid in coverage as an edge, which is rare for the position.

The positives to Golston are again, his motor will not quit. He chases down plays from behind and uses his extreme length and arm span to get to areas others may not. He tracks the ball well and uses a really powerful punch to get defenders off him to help locate the ball. He gets into passing lanes and for an edge defended 10 passes and had 3 interceptions. When Golston gets his arms around the ball carrier he will violently tackle him. More of a tackle for loss than sack guy, but he flashes a lot of getting into the backfield.
The negatives are Golston can get high with his pads and be knocked off balance sometimes. He doesn’t have the ideal bend or speed but uses his length to compensate for some of this. For as violent as his first punch is, it tends to fall off after initial contact and he will get thrown off and it will take him a moment to recover. He isn’t a high sack guy coming out of college and will need more of a plan and moves to be considered a consistent threat coming off the edge.
Golston will need some time but should be part of a rotation at some point. His motor and length are extremely appealing and with some time to develop could find himself playing different positions from inside to outside on the line and even dropping into some coverage in short zones.
