Cowboys Already Out of the Running for Top Head Coach Hire Thanks to Jerry Jones' Penny-Pinching
By Cem Yolbulan
It is the worst-kept secret in the NFL that the Dallas Cowboys will likely part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy at the end of the season. Jerry Jones already refused to give him a contract extension and McCarthy's deal is set to expire after this season. Sitting at 3-5 with Dak Prescott injured, it will be close to impossible for McCarthy to turn things around enough to retain his job.
Naturally, Cowboys fans have started speculating on who their next head coach will be. The names of Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel are being thrown out while the Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson remains the dream candidate for a lot of teams.
Johnson tops the list of head coaching candidates for many fans. However, knowing Jerry Jones and his distaste for spending, that remains a pipe dream for the Cowboys.
Jerry Jones Unlikely to Hire Elite Head Coach Post-Mike McCarthy
NFL insider Josina Anderson had previously reported that Johnson was looking for a $15 million salary to leave Detroit and become a head coach. Considering that he would be a 38-year-old first-time head coach, that would probably be considered too pricey for Jerry Jones.
There are currently five head coaches who make $15 million per year or more: Andy Reid, Sean Payton, Mike Tomlin, Jim Harbaugh, and Sean McVay. McCarthy is middle of the pack in the league with his $4 million salary, per Front Office Sports.
Would Jones really break the bank and triple the salary he is paying his head coach? Considering how much more committed he is to making money than winning a Super Bowl, that is certainly difficult to imagine.
