Cowboys Coach Gets Emotional in Press Conference Before Season Finale
By Cem Yolbulan
In the 2024 offseason, the Dallas Cowboys lost defensive coordinator Dan Quinn who took the Washington Commanders' head coaching job. Cowboys fans were happy about this change who thought Quinn's defensive scheme was one of the reasons the team came up short in the postseason.
The Cowboys replaced Quinn with former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer. Things didn't go according to plan. The Cowboys defense took a nosedive. The unit that ranked fifth last season is currently the 31st-best defensive unit this season. They have allowed the second-most points of any team in the NFL.
The injuries obviously played a huge part in this regression. The Cowboys were decimated by injuries all season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The defensive production, or lack thereof, was disappointing, however, well before the injury bug hit.
As a result, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's seat started to get warmer. The 68-year-old coach recently refused to elaborate on his job security.
On Monday, he signaled that he may be nearing the end of his coaching career. In his press conference, he was notably emotional.
Per Cowboys reporters, Zimmer had a different tune. Talking about his son, Adam, who passed away in 2022, the experienced head coach struggled to hold back his tears.
This was the final press conference of the season for Zimmer. It could quite possibly be the final presser of Zimmer's career.
The 2024 season may not have gone how Zimmer had hoped, but he certainly had an illustrious career he and his family should be proud of regardless of whether he comes back to the Cowboys next season.
