Cowboys Reportedly Had Lengthy Interview With Coach Fans Want No Part of

The Dallas Cowboys just completed their fourth interview for their head coach opening. After holding interviews with former head coaches Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier, and Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, the Cowboys talked to their offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for the head coach vacancy, per the team's official social media account. ESPN's Todd Archer reported that the interview took around four hours long.
Cowboys Had 4-Hour Interview With HC Candidate Brian Schottenheimer
Schottenheimer has recently emerged as a top head coaching candidate for the Cowboys. Even though his hiring would make for the smoothest transition as he has been with the organization for the past three seasons, Schottenheimer is generally not at the top of the list for most Cowboys fans.
After Mike McCarthy's departure, there was hope among the fanbase that Jerry Jones would bring in an elite head coach to get this team to the next level. Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson or defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn were considered the premium options on the market. However, Johnson was already hired in Chicago, and Glenn is likely headed to the Jets. Mike Vrabel was another experienced head coach who was favored among Cowboys hopefuls.
The group of four head coaching candidates that Jones has interviewed so far isn't the most inspiring group. Saleh, Frazier, Moore, and Schottenheimer are not the most coveted group of coaches out there, leading many to believe that this is the direct result of Jones' penny-pinching and unwillingness to break the bank for a coaching hire.
Jones likely also wants a head coach who he can have ultimate authority over. He presumably doesn't want a popular figure with a lot of control over the team. That is why Schottenheimer makes sense for the Cowboys.
Deion Sanders remains an option for Dallas, but elite head coaching candidates are quickly coming off the market. The next step in the process remains to be seen but with the way things are going, it's hard to imagine that Cowboys fans will be thrilled with the hire.
