Shocking New Favorite Emerges in Cowboys Next Head Coach Odds
By Cem Yolbulan
Despite the fact that the NFL playoffs are in full swing and we are headed to the championship weekend, one of the biggest storylines out there remains the Cowboys' head coaching search.
Dallas isn't casting the widest net possible during the process, but they have already interviewed former Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. They have an interview scheduled with Leslie Frazier on Monday. Cowboys legend Deion Sanders remains an option, and Jerry Jones will presumably consider Lions coordinators Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson more seriously now that their season is over.
Yet, on DraftKings Sportsbook, there is a shocking name that leads the Cowboys' next head coach odds and it is none of those above candidates. Per oddsmakers, Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is the overwhelming favorite to be the next head coach at -180.
Cowboys Next Head Coach Odds
- Brian Schottenheimer: -180
- Kellen Moore: +250
- Robert Saleh: +470
- Kliff Kingsbury: +500
- Deion Sanders: +650
- Ben Johnson: +750
There are certainly advantages to making an internal hire. Schottenheimer knows the organization and has worked with Jerry Jones for the last three seasons. Dak Prescott and the rest of the offensive unit would presumably be interested in having Schottenheimer as the next head coach.
In his first season as the OC in Dallas, Schottenheimer led the team to the best offense in the league. The 2024 season didn't go according to the plan, and the Cowboys offense, especially the running game, struggled to be effective for most of the year.
For Jones, hiring Schottenheimer likely has a financial aspect to it as well. Jones can have some financial savings by not hiring one of the premium candidates for which other teams are also competing. Plus, a first-time head coach with a lower profile presumably means Jones can continue exerting his authority over the team.
That is why Schottenheimer is an attractive option for Jones and the Cowboys. Whether another candidate emerges during the rest of the process remains to be seen but it looks like it's Schottenheimer's job to lose for now.
