Cowboys Reunite Brian Schottenheimer With Perfect WR in Big Projected Trade

The Dallas Cowboys could do HC Brian Schottenheiner a huge favor by reuniting him with one of his former wide receivers with this trade.

It's an NFL team's job to ensure that a first-year head coach is well-equipped to hit the ground running. The Dallas Cowboys have been doing this for HC Brian Schottenheimer from a personnel standpoint, giving him the green light to add promising names like offensive coordinator Klayton Adams and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to his staff.

Although the coaching staff is coming together nicely, the Cowboys have a lot of work to do when it comes to upgrading a roster that just went 7-10 last season. The wide receiver room is one position that needs a serious boost — especially after CeeDee Lamb and Jalen Tolbert were the team's only consistent wideouts in 2024.

While a draft pick or free agent signing could help address this issue, the Cowboys have the perfect opportunity to improve their WR situation with one offseason trade.

Cowboys Acquire Veteran WR in Huge Projected Trade

One wideout who could be traded this offseason is none other than Seattle Seahawks playmaker Tyler Lockett. The 32-year-old WR's $30.8 million salary cap hit is likely something the Seahawks want off the books. However, the fact he only carries a $10 million base salary means he's still a tradeable asset to any wideout-hungry franchises.

The Cowboys are currently $2.3 million over next year's cap but that doesn't mean room can't be made to acquire someone with the veteran speedster's skillset.

Drafted 69th overall by the Seahawks in 2015, Lockett has been one of the NFL's top downfield threats of the last decade. His ability to be available more often than not led to his suiting up in 161 games during that stretch, converting 661 receptions into 8,594 receiving yards and 61 touchdowns while earning a Pro Bowl appearance and three All-Pro nods (albeit as a returner) along the way.

Even though his production has been declining, Lockett is still talented enough to work as the Cowboys' WR2. The former Kansas State product just posted a 49-600-2 stat line in 17 appearances with the Seahawks last season and likely would've finished with better numbers had it not been for Jaxon Smith-Njigba's breakout performance.

Additionally, joining the Cowboys would reunite Lockett with Schottenheimer. The 51-year-old HC served as the Seahawks offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2020, which was one of the most productive periods of Lockett's career. He tallied 3,076 yards and 28 TDs on 239 catches in 48 games.

Taking his monstrous cap hit into account, the Cowboys can likely land Lockett for a Day 3 selection. America's Team will hold seven selections on the 2025 NFL draft's third day, which includes four in the fifth round alone. The best of the bunch (No. 150) could be enough to get the job done on its own.

As great as it'd be to reunite Schottenheimer and Lockett, Dallas will need more than one trade to vault back into the Lombardi Trophy conversation. After all, the Cowboys are currently in a three-way tie for the 20th-best Super Bowl 60 odds (+6000) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
