It's well-documented by this point that the Dallas Cowboys' 2024 performance left much to be desired. Between the plethora of injuries and underperformances that led to the team's seven-win performance, it's safe to say Cowboys fans are ready for a clean slate and hope the Brian Schottenheimer era will give them what they're looking for.
While the uneventful campaign was bad on its own, the Cowboys' latest season was made worse by their being forced to watch the rival Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl 59. Few things sting as much in sports as watching a rival franchise win the league's top title, and the Eagles' victory should motivate the Cowboys to get back on track to steal some of that thunder back.
As much as the Cowboys would like to bring the Eagles back down to earth, the 2025 NFL season isn't for another few months. Fortunately, the latest news coming out of Philadelphia is bound to make Dallas fans smile before the weekend.
Cowboys News: Eagles Admit Bryce Huff Signing Was a Failure With 49ers Trade
On Friday afternoon, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Eagles have traded veteran pass rusher Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for "a mid-round pick." Schefter added that "Huff already has reworked his contract to help facilitate the trade," which is on hold until June 1 at the earliest.
Huff's time with the Cowboys' rival was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it situation. The former Memphis Tiger signed a three-year, $51.5 million contract with the Eagles as soon as the 2024 free agency period opened. Now that he's been sent packing less than a year later, Philadelphia clearly didn't take long to have regrets about the signing.
After a career year in 2023 with the New York Jets, Huff only mustered five solo tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble while being limited to 12 games with the Eagles due to a wrist injury. Even though he returned to the lineup by Week 17, it was too little, too late. He had lost the coaching staff's trust by the playoffs, resulting in his being inactive for the Super Bowl.
By the time all was said and done, Huff's 69.7 Pro Football Focus pass rush grade was his first effort since his rookie season (61.9).
Cowboys fans certainly don't feel bad for the rival fanbase as the Eagles come to terms with their $51.5 million signing being a bust. Philadelphia is only getting a mid-round pick back for Huff, which might not even amount to an NFL-caliber player depending on how he develops.
NFL free agency often results in several regrettable contracts being handed out, and the Eagles' deal with Huff is one of the latest examples. Although the Cowboys are far from perfect themselves, the Eagles' blunder is an example of why Jerry Jones' more cautious approach to the offseason might not be that bad after all.
