May is already flying by as the NFL offseason keeps its foot on the gas pedal. The Dallas Cowboys have undergone plenty of changes since head coach Brian Schottenheimer took over in January, with free agency and the 2025 NFL draft serving as tools to help make the 51-year-old bench best's inaugural campaign as smooth as possible.
As productive as America's Team has been this spring, there's still room for improvement — especially if making the playoffs is the No. 1 priority. The Cowboys still have time to add free-agent help before organized team workouts (OTAs) begin on Monday, May 19, including one available cornerback that they can save from the offseason wasteland.
Cowboys Must Rescue CB Stephon Gilmore From FA Wasteland
No one would blame Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones if he wanted to further flesh out the team's cornerback room this offseason. Injuries ravaged Dallas' CB depth throughout the 2024 campaign, as Trevon Diggs was the only member of the unit to hit double-digit appearances. Even then, he was limited to only 11 outings.
Even though the Cowboys' CBs are recovering well this offseason, too much depth isn't a bad thing. That's why Jones & Co. would be wise to try reuniting with former Dallas ballhawk Stephon Gilmore, who previously spent the 2023 season in the Lone Star State.
Gilmore, 34, is a 13-year veteran who's played games for six franchises across his career. The former South Carolina Gamecock has been a standout performer just about everywhere he's gone, racking up 521 solo tackles, 149 defended passes, and 32 interceptions (2 Pick-6s) in 180 regular-season outings, which isn't even to mention the his five Pro Bowl appearances, AP Comeback Player of the Year Award, or Super Bowl LIII ring.
With how badly banged-up the Cowboys' CB room was last year, fans should welcome a potential reunion. Gilmore visited the franchise's facilities in late April, leaving fans to wonder if a return was imminent. Even though the visit was "not an official free agent visit," it may have been the first step toward the former 2012 first-rounder's return to town.
At this stage of the offseason, the Cowboys can likely sign Gilmore to a cheap 'prove yourself' contract. He's unlikely to get anything better than that now that OTAs are approaching, especially with his turning 35 in September while also coming off a campaign with the Minnesota Vikings that saw him ranked as the 94th-graded CB on Pro Football Focus.
With how quickly the FA market is drying up, the Cowboys must act quickly to sign Gilmore before another CB-needy team has the same idea.
