The offseason can be a brutal time for players around the league, and that's been the case with former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore. With the calendar set to turn over to April, he remains unsigned, and it looks like his career has hit a brand new breaking point after his Dallas split.
Gilmore last played in the NFL during the 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings. Last season, he wasn't added to a roster, as he was "waiting for the right opportunity." But as we enter the second offseason of this, it looks like his career won't be able to recover.
Ex-Cowboys CB Stephon Gilmore’s Career Looks to Hit Breaking Point
During his tenure with the Cowboys, Gilmore had 68 total tackles, 13 pass breakups, and two interceptions across 17 games. On Pro Football Focus, he finished with a 71.2 overall grade and a 69.3 coverage grade.
He kept it up during the time with the Vikings the following year, posting 56 total tackles, nine deflections, and a pick. But his grades on PFF took a dip, as his overall grade fell to 62.2, and coverage grade to 59.2.
Clearly, Gilmore's best days are behind him, and he'll be 36 years old by the time the 2026 season begins.
Teams aren't rushing to sign a corner who's on the tail end of his career, and the fact that he's been a free agent for over a year isn't any better. The Cowboys flirted with the idea of bringing him back last offseason, as he visited the facility before the NFL draft, yet they decided to go against it and nabbed Shavon Revel Jr. in the third round instead.
Gilmore has found plenty of success in the NFL, which has featured five Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pros. And while he was one of the best cornerbacks for an extended time, those days are over. The 2026 NFL draft has the attention of all 32 teams, and they'll likely revisit the free agent market after.
Nonetheless, no one seems to be running to add Gilmore. Names like Marshon Lattimore, Trevon Diggs, and L'Jarius Sneed are still up for grabs, and teams are likely to go down that route if they are looking for a veteran in the secondary.
Gilmore's run following his Cowboys stint has gone in a negative direction, and the lack of news around him this offseason shows how he's viewed inside league circles now.
