Former Eagles star gives hysterical reaction to Cowboys' Christian Parker hire

The hiring of the Cowboys' new defensive coordinator got plenty of surprised looks, including from his former Eagles star secondary player.

The biggest need for improvement for the Dallas Cowboys this past offseason was the defense. That unit was last in the NFL, giving up 30.1 points per game, and ranked 27th in total yards. The Cowboys immediately addressed that side of the ball, starting with the defensive coordinator.

In late January, former Philadelphia Eagles secondary and passing game coach Christian Parker became the new defensive coordinator for the Cowboys. This was certainly a surprising move given that Parker moved to what used to be his arch-rivals in the NFC East. However, it was very well received in Dallas, and most believe Parker is the perfect man for the job.

Six-time Pro Bowler Darius Slay shared a season with Parker in 2024, and both played a role in the Eagles' Super Bowl that season. Slay is now retired, but he recently joined ESPN about the Cowboys' hiring of Parker. Let's say he felt what every Eagles fan felt.

"Man, I had to text my boy quick. I had to mediate for a second. That's my guy. CP, he's a great coach, but he hurt my feelings when he went to the Cowboys," Slay said on the ESPN segment.

Parker's reply to his former star corner's message? The money sign: $. The specific details of Parker's multi-year contract with the Cowboys haven't been released, but it's obvious the Cowboys gave an offer Parker couldn't refuse. Besides, the promotion of the defensive coordinator for America's team at 34 is something incredible.

"Can't blame him," Slay said with a smile. There are high expectations for Parker to turn this defense around, and first-round draft pick Caleb Downs is another prodigy who could do something special given Parker's history with young, talented players in the secondary.

The 34-year-old is the youngest defensive coordinator in Cowboys history. There's a reason why. Parker led the Eagles' secondary to great heights and worked with some special players during his time there.

At the end of last season, it was clear Matt Eberflus needed to be let go. The big question was who would be hired as the new Cowboys DC. Given how strong the Dallas offense looked last year, the new selection had to be a home run for the Cowboys to get back on track.

It's funny that Slay was disappointed, but of course, it's all love and business in the NFL, and he probably speaks for all Eagles fans on this subject.
