The Dallas Cowboys made the most shocking hire of the 2025 coaching cycle when they chose Brian Schottenheimer last month. The 51-year-old has never been a head football coach at any level, yet owner Jerry Jones hired him anyway. Cowboys fans have every right to be upset with this hire and be afraid for the team's future.

That said, it seems that Jones isn't too concerned about this future. According to a recent article from Dan Gelston of the Associated Press, Jones considers the Cowboys in win-now mode.

Jerry Jones Continues to Insist Cowboys Are in Win-Now Mode

"“The decisions I’m making are not based on rebuilding. They’re based on competing. And competing now. The decisions I made last year were based on competing now. Now they didn’t exactly work out. But I think I paid Dak more than anybody’s ever been paid in the NFL. That’s now. That’s not the future. We’re excited about our team’s ability to compete right now"

Jones's words don't exactly match his actions. Last offseason, Dallas had a chance to sign Derrick Henry, but they didn't even make an offer. Jones would later say Henry didn't fit their system, which is completely asinine.

However, that misstep is now in the distant past and people are now focused on the hiring of Schottenheimer. From the outside looking in. this hiring does not set the Cowboys up for immediate success. Dallas was the only team to even interview Schottenheimer and when he was hired there were still a few other sought-after candidates available.

That's not to say that Schottenheimer is bound to fail, but Jones definitely could have tried to set the team up better.

Moving on to the Dak Prescott contract extension. Sure, signing Prescott to a huge deal does seem to be a win-now decision. However, in the current NFL quarterbacks are more important than ever and if they didn't sign Prescott, the Cowboys would have been in massive trouble.

If Jones is serious about the Cowboys being in win-mode, he must add more the one free agent this offseason and find a way to keep Micah Parsons under contract.
