Jerry Jones Makes Frustrating Remarks About Cowboys Pursuing Roster Upgrades
By Cem Yolbulan
Despite an up-and-down start to the season, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves at 3-2 through the first five weeks. Considering the number of injuries they had and their performance on the field, that is not a bad place to be.
At the same time, it's clear that the Cowboys need to significantly improve if they want to be Super Bowl contenders. Despite playing a relatively soft schedule so far, the Cowboys are middle of the pack (15th in the league) on the offensive end and below-average (23rd) on the defensive end.
Plus, several key players find themselves on the sideline. DaRon Bland and DeMarcus Lawrence are on the injured reserve list, Sam Williams is out for the season, and Micah Parsons and Caelen Carson missed Week 5 against the Steelers. In the early first quarter, they lost another pass rusher Marshawn Kneeland.
Cowboys fans naturally thought that there would be ensuing moves to address the holes. Jerry Jones, however, doesn't think so. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Jones said they will be relying on their depth and young players to step up.
Cowboys News: Jerry Jones Doesn't Think Roster Upgrade is Necessary
The cowboys owner said that there are enough guys on the practice squad who can be trusted in the absences of the key starters. He added that who needs to be aggressive isn't the front office but the players on the field.
"The (only) positive of losing a player is that a young player, usually your depth, is going to get some reps, a player that can get better for the future."
- Jerry Jones
This is certainly frustrating to hear for Cowboys fans. Jones's statements can be acceptable for a rebuilding team in the midst of a developmental season. Dallas, on the other hand, is desperately trying to win and doesn't have the luxury of waiting for young players to "get better for the future". Once again, it seems like the stated goals of the franchise and the actions of the management don't align.
