The Dallas Cowboys traded their best defensive player shortly before the start of the season. That's why it's not much of a surprise to hear that their pass rush department hasn't been as proficient as they would've wanted.
With that in mind, the rumors about their interest in trading for Maxx Crosby made perfect sense. The Las Vegas Raiders' superstar is one of the best headhunters in the game, and he'd certainly give them a much-needed boost. Nevertheless, it seems like he won't be taking his talents to Arlington any time soon.
The Cowboys Won't Trade For Maxx Crosby, But They Will Make a Move
The Athletic's Dianna Russini sat down with Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones to discuss his plans for the Nov. 4 trade deadline. There, he denied the team's interest in Crosby, adding that there has been no contact between the parties:
"While the Cowboys have let teams know they’re open for business before the Nov. 4 trade deadline, Jerry Jones told me they never reached out to the Raiders about Maxx Crosby," wrote Russini.
As disappointing as that might be, not all hope is lost for Dallas fans. Jones admitted that the team is working on something to boost their defense. However, they're not actively looking to add a pass rusher.
“I would say, without incriminating any area of it,” Jones told Russini, “it would be a defensive player. But not a pass rusher.”
The Cowboys' defense certainly has several areas of improvement. Trevon Diggs hasn't played well all year, and his recent absence has also sparked doubts about his future with the organization. They could certainly use someone to complement DaRon Bland in the secondary.
They should also be interested in boosting their linebackers unit. Jack Sanborn has been one of the worst offseason additions in the league, and he was a healthy scratch in their last game.
Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean they will have to break the bank or give up a lot before the trade deadline. Barring setbacks, they will get young star LB DeMarvion Overshown back on the field soon, and rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr. is also reportedly inching closer to making his NFL debut.
The Cowboys' defense has been a talking point for all the wrong reasons, but they're still 3-3-1 and have plenty of football left to be played this season. Whether they'll make the necessary moves to make a run at the postseason, though, remains to be seen.
