Jerry Jones Speaks on Struggling Cowboys Rookie After Another Injury
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys made the bold decision to let long-time starting left tackle Tyron Smith walk in free agency and replace him with a talented yet raw rookie Tyler Guyton. After using their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on the Oklahoma standout, the Cowboys immediately made him the starter.
The transition to the NFL for the 6-foot-8, 320-pound prospect hasn't been smooth. Not only has he been struggling to perform but he has also been dealing with injuries all season. After already missing two games earlier in the season, Guyton suffered a high ankle sprain on Thanksgiving and had to leave the game.
Chuma Edoga replaced him to finish the game and looked better in the rookie's absence. When asked about it, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he liked what he saw from the team after Guyton left the game.
According to Cowboys reporter Joseph Hoyt, Jones was asked whether the team considered making a change at left tackle. Jones responded by saying the change was already made, suggesting that Guyton may have lost his starting job for the foreseeable future, regardless of his injury.
Even though Jones added that he wasn't too worried about Guyton's future, this is certainly not the start the organization wanted from their prized prospect. Guyton has been one of the worst starting left tackles in the league, per PFF, receiving a 49.2 grade for the season. In four of his ten starts, Guyton had a grade lower than a 50, with his lowest mark coming in Week 13 against the Giants. He has allowed five sacks, five QB hits, and committed 16 penalties so far.
It is too early to give up on Guyton but the rookie's struggles have been a big reason why the Cowboys offense has disappointed so far. Let's hope things start looking better for the young offensive lineman upon his return.
