There have been plenty of disappointments about the Cowboys season so far. Yet, none has been as surprising as the defensive collapse through the first half of the season. After back-to-back seasons of being a top-five defensive unit under Dan Quinn, the Cowboys have struggled immensely and are the 31st-ranked defense in the league.

Naturally, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has been on the receiving end of serious criticism. Once one of the best ball-hawking teams in the league, the Cowboys are not forcing any turnovers right now.

After the Cowboys' third straight loss in Week 9, Trevon Diggs said that the team was still adjusting to Zimmer's new defensive scheme. That certainly is frustrating to hear after half of the season has passed and Zimmer agrees. Earlier in the week, when asked about this, the experienced coach said, "You have to ask the players".

Referring to the play where Falcons WR Darnell Mooney scored a touchdown, he said "It was man-to-man", basically blaming the players instead of the scheme.

Latest Mike Zimmer Statement Signals Rift Between Team and Coaching Staff

Regardless of who is to blame, the fact that the coaching staff and the players are pointing fingers at each other is not a good sign.

This is the latest example of a poor locker room atmosphere in Dallas. The coaches and the players have rarely looked to be on the same page and there has been an evident lack of accountability.

The Cowboys take on the Eagles, Texans, and the Commanders in the upcoming three weeks. The defense has to get back on track if they want to get anything out of those games.
