The Dallas Cowboys' 2025 training camp is in full swing as the final days of July are upon us. First-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer has been relentlessly working out his players the last few days to weed out any underperformers, setting the stage for his first 53-man roster as the Cowboys' leader on the sidelines.
The start of training camp has also been the Dallas coaching staff's first glimpse of the franchise's offseason additions, whether they arrived as veteran free agents or fresh-faced rookies. The Cowboys have limited spots available on their roster, though, meaning some recent additions won't be in the Lone Star State anymore come September.
Cowboys CB Robert Rochell Won't Play a Snap in Dallas
With the cornerback room decimated by injuries during the 2024 campaign, the Cowboys aimed to add depth in the secondary this offseason. Their search led to an invite for veteran CB Robert Rochell to their rookie minicamp, which resulted in him signing a one-year contract with the organization in June.
Drafted No. 130 overall by the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, Rochell spent time with four NFL franchises before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in March. His stint with the Super Bowl runners-up lasted less than two months, as he was released in May before landing and capitalizing on his opportunity with the Cowboys shortly thereafter.
Still, signing with America's Team doesn't guarantee that the ex-Central Arkansas product will be on the 53-man roster in Week 1.
Rochell doesn't exactly have a resume that can secure him a roster spot. The 27-year-old CB has only played 27 defensive snaps over the last three seasons, with 26 of those opportunities happening in 2022. He played to a 54.9 Pro Football Focus coverage grade that season, which is likely why he has been mostly relegated to special teams duty since then.
On top of that, Rochell hasn't made any noise since signing with the Cowboys. Beat writers and fans alike haven't been talking much about him, which means he hasn't found a way to stand out from the rest of the CB competition. If that doesn't change soon, especially with training camp underway, the Shreveport, LA native could be a part of Dallas' first wave of cuts.
Although he was only signed for depth, Rochell can't continue with the status quo. The Cowboys need him to prove his worth sooner rather than later, or else he might have to look for a new employer before the summer is over.
