3 Former Cowboys Who Failed Miserably With Their New Teams in Week 1
By Randy Gurzi
The Dallas Cowboys front office scored several wins right before Week 1. After taking heat all offseason for dragging their feet on contract extensions, they pulled it all together just before kick-off.
Dallas agreed to terms on a four-year deal with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in time to get him back on the field for their Week 1 showdown with the Cleveland Browns. Then with hours remaining before the start of their season, they made Dak Prescott the highest-paid player in the NFL after locking up their quarterback with a four-year, $240 million deal.
They then watched Ezekiel perform as well as Zack Moss and Derrick Henry proving they might not be so incompetent after all. In that same breath, let's look at three free agents who left Dallas this offseason but didn't live up to expectations in Week 1.
3. Dan Quinn, Head Coach
Dan Quinn deserves a lot of praise for the work he did during his three years with Dallas. As a defensive coordinator, he redeemed himself and earned another shot as a head coach. The problem is that he decided to take on quite the rebuilding project with the Washington Commanders.
He got to work by signing just about every former Cowboy he could and hoped to get his new team's defense on track.
His first outing was far from successful as Quinn's defense was carved apart by Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mayfield had 289 yards with four touchdowns and rookie running back Bucky Irvin put up 62 yards on nine carries during a 37-20 defeat.
As for Quinn's replacement, Mike Zimmer, he was a huge success. The Cowboys seemed much better against the run than they ever did with Quinn. What's best is they didn't sacrifice their aggressiveness as they had six sacks and two picks.
