The Cowboys are set to begin training camp in just under two weeks with several big questions facing the roster after last season's disappointing early playoff exit. Potential contract extensions for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb remain a hot topic, though another critical position is filled with uncertainty as well.

Despite the much-hyped reunion with Ezekiel Elliot, Dallas' running back room is one of the worst in the NFL on paper. Elliot's been on the decline for several years and averaged just 3.5 yards per carry in 2023, while Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn have a combined 425 career rushing yards.

Needless to say, this is a position group in need of a jolt. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations like the Cowboys have, it'd be wise to invite some extra competition to camp.

3 Free Agent Running Backs the Cowboys Can Still Sign

1. Kareem Hunt

The list of available running backs is slim, though Kareem Hunt is likely the best of the bunch and represents the best opportunity for Dallas to bring a true upgrade into the building.

He's a dynamic dual-threat asset with proven pass-blocking abilities who just scored nine TDs in a part-time role last year. Hunt likely doesn't represent a bell-cow at this point in his career, but he can still provide value. In my opinion, he'd immediately become the best running back on the team.

In theory, Hunt and Elliot would form a duo greater than the sum of its individual parts. They're both adept in the passing game with a keen understanding of blocking schemes. Their experience could do wonders, though each one would likely falter if left to their own accord.

The best version of this backfield involves a rotation. Dowdle and Vaughn are promising but if the Cowboys want to maximize their chances to win this year, they need to acquire a suitable partner for Elliot.

Hunt could be that guy. Given his non-existent market, Jerry Jones likely wouldn't have to break the bank either.
