Cowboys Add Two Players To Active Roster Ahead of Week 2
By Cem Yolbulan
It may only be Week 2 of the NFL season but injuries have already started to surface. The Dallas Cowboys, already dealing with the absences of DaRon Bland and Sam Williams on the defensive side of the ball, lost some of their offensive firepower this week. Starting tight end Jake Ferguson is doubtful to play against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Fellow TE John Stephens Jr. has already been ruled out for the game, creating a need at the position.
The Cowboys addressed that need by elevating Princeton Fant from the practice squad, according to The Athletic's Jon Machota. Dallas also brought up veteran linebacker Nick Vigil, who signed with the team late in the offseason.
Cowboys Elevate 2 Players Ahead of Week 2 Matchup vs. Saints
Fant signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He was later released and signed back to the practice squad. In his rookie season, he was elevated to the active roster twice, making appearances on special teams. The former Tennessee playmaker suffered the same fate this summer after he was waived and re-signed to the practice squad. He will make up the tight-end rotation alongside Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford if Ferguson ends up missing the game.
Vigil is a familiar face to new Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. He spent his best seasons as a pro under Zimmer in Minnesota, appearing in 64% of defensive snaps and 43% of special teams snaps in his last full season with the team. The Cowboys have Damone Clark, Eric Kendricks, and DeMarvion Overshown as the starters at linebacker but Vigil will likely get a chance to show what he can do on Sunday.
