Cowboys fans had a big scare on Thursday when they saw star cornerback Trevon Diggs' name on the injury report. It was reported that he was a limited participant in practice due to an ankle injury. Considering that he had no injury designation the day prior, the surprise injury caught fans off-guard.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones went on 105.3 The Fan on Friday and clarified Diggs' status. According to The Athletic's Jon Machota, the Cowboys owner said Diggs is expected to play in Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cowboys News: Trevon Diggs Expected to Play vs. Steelers
This is great news for the Cowboys who already have fellow starter DaRon Bland on the IR list. Rookie Caelen Carson, who has been starting in his place, is also questionable to play after missing Week 4 against the New York Giants. In Carson's absence, Amani Oruwariye and Andrew Booth Jr. split the snaps opposite Diggs.
Diggs missed all but two games last season after tearing his ACL in practice. He is still working back to his peak when he was a Pro Bowler for two consecutive seasons and earned All-Pro honors in 2021. He had 11 interceptions and only allowed a 57.3% completion rate when targeted during that season.
This season, the 27-year-old is off to a slow start. He has one interception through four games and allowed 68.4% completion in coverage. He also has five missed tackles already.
Regardless of his struggles to start the season, the Cowboys are counting on their talented defender to get back on track. Once the star ballhawk DaRon Bland returns, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer hopes his unit gets to an elite level.
