Last season, the Dallas Cowboys lost their star cornerback Trevon Diggs to an ACL tear during a Week 3 practice. They were without him since September 21 but had optimism that the All-Pro defender would be back to start the 2024 season.

Initially, the Cowboys received good news from Diggs. He has been doing rehab work during the team's offseason program and looked on schedule. Even though he should still be a good bet to be available when the Cowboys take on the Browns on September 8 in their season opener, the latest update on Diggs isn't particularly encouraging.

According to Michael Gehlken of Dallas Morning News, Diggs' status for training camp is still up in the air.

"Maybe. Maybe not. But I’m feeling comfortable. I feel good."

Trevon Diggs on his training camp status

The Cowboys begin training camp on July 22 this year. There is still a month and a half left but the fact that Diggs doesn't feel confident enough to say that he will be there at the start is concerning.

Head coach Mike McCarthy also confirmed that there is a chance Diggs will miss the beginning of the training camp.

"We’ll respect the timeline, but Trevon looks great. He goes a little later in the day [in his rehabilitation workout] than the other three... As far as when he gets back, let’s be honest, we’re going to be very cautious with those guys. We’re not going to put them out there too soon. Better later than too fast."

Diggs feeling good and comfortable is obviously an excellent sign but missing training camp ten months after the ACL tears is not ideal. He may start the camp on the PUP list but the Cowboys desperately need him on the field.

Dallas already lost Stephon Gilmore in free agency and saw a ton of veteran talent leave this offseason, especially on the defensive end. The Cowboys have a ton of faith in the pairing of DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs as the backbone of their pass defense. The sooner Diggs returns, the better Cowboys fans will feel about their chances of contending next season.

On FanDuel Sportsbook, the Dallas Cowboys are +650 to win the NFC and make the Super Bowl. They need to have their full complement of players back and healthy to have a chance to do that.
