The roster cutdown deadline is 4 pm on Tuesday, meaning that there will be plenty of capable NFL players hitting the waiver wire between now and then. There will be an opportunity for teams like the Dallas Cowboys to make additions to their final roster in positions of need.

One of those positions is the running back. The Cowboys moved on from Tony Pollard and replaced him with Ezekiel Elliott this spring. That didn't solve their rushing problems as the rotation of post-prime Zeke, Rico Dowdle, and Royce Freeman still leaves plenty to be desired.

Therefore, the Cowboys can be expected to be active on the waiver wire for another running back. However, Jerry Jones & Co. has a different plan in mind. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Dallas is meeting free agent RB Dalvin Cook on Monday night.

NFL Rumors: RB Dalvin Cook is Visiting the Cowboys on Monday

A mutual interest between Cook and the Cowboys has been previously reported but nothing came to fruition. The four-time Pro Bowler is coming off his worst season as a pro.

After signing with the New York Jets in the 2023 offseason, Cook was outplayed by lead RB Breece Hall, and finished the regular season with 214 rushing yards and no touchdowns, averaging a career-low 3.2 yards per carry. For the postseason, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens and played in the Divisional Round against the Houston Texans.

Since then, however, he has been available on the free agent market. That is why it is confusing that the Cowboys are intending to sign him right now.

Jerry Jones waited the entire training camp and preseason to bolster the running back rotation but seemingly can't wait another 24 hours to see who is available after the roster cutdown date.

The Cowboys are already making a big bet on Zeke to get back to his prime. Doing the same with Cook is certainly a risky proposition.
