Cowboys Sign Mike Zimmer Favorite to Give Him Impressive Defensive Depth
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys made big roster transactions on Wednesday, waiving linebacker Byron Vaugns, putting DE Sam Williams on the injured list, and placing star receiver CeeDee Lamb on the Reserve/Did Not Report list, while signing three players to the open roster spots. The Lamb move naturally drew the most attention due to its potential impact but one under-the-radar move could be important for Mike Zimmer and the Cowboys' defense.
The Cowboys announced the signing of three defenders; Darius Harris, Albert Huggins, and Nick Vigil, giving more options to Mike Zimmer to evaluate and potentially add to the final roster. The last name on that list is particularly intriguing due to his connection with Zimmer.
Cowboys News: Dallas Signs Former Mike Zimmer Favorite LB Nick Vigil
Nick Vigil had one of his most productive seasons in the NFL in Minnesota under Mike Zimmer. The 30-year-old defender played for the Vikings in the 2021 and 2023 seasons, appearing in a total of 24 games In 2021, he played 64% of defensive snaps and 43% of special teams snaps for then-head coach Mike Zimmer.
Zimmer recently talked about the importance of inside linebackers. Therefore, bringing in a familiar face to bolster the depth there shouldn't come as a surprise.
Vigil's calling card is his versatility. He can play all three linebacker positions as well as regularly appearing on special teams throughout his career. He also comes with extensive familiarity with Zimmer's scheme which should prove valuable on a team going through schematic changes on that end.
The Cowboys have Damone Clark, Eric Kendricks, and DeMarvion Overshown as probable starters at linebacker. Zimmer, as someone who values versatility, will presumably have Vigil back up all three positions if he were to make the final 53-man roster.
