Cowboys Suddenly Have Perfect Trade Opportunity To Address RB Need
By Cem Yolbulan
It is hard to argue against the fact that the Dallas Cowboys need an upgrade in the running back rotation. Jerry Jones & Co. can talk all they want about how they feel good about the RB room but the truth of the matter is that the Cowboys don't have enough quality and depth in the position.
Ezekiel Elliott has already been marginalized as he had a total of eight carries in the last two weeks. Rico Dowdle is fine but he isn't necessarily setting the world on fire, either. As a team, the Cowboys are averaging 3.5 yards per carry, a bottom-five mark in the NFL. They only scored one rushing touchdown through four games. Out of 50 qualified running backs on PFF, Dowdle ranks 18th and Zeke 35th.
Thursday Night Football wasn't any different. Despite the win, the Cowboys averaged 3.5 yards per rushing attempt. The lack of trust in the running back rotation is evident as the Cowboys ran three running plays for CeeDee Lamb.
This makes the case for trading for a running back even stronger. Our very own Joe Summers of KC Kingdom came up with a trade that could benefit both the Cowboys and the Chiefs.
In the proposed trade, the Cowboys land Samaje Perine from the Chiefs. Following the signing of Kareem Hunt and the looming return of Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kansas City doesn't need Samaje Perine in the rotation. Perine will eventually fall out of the rotation, opening a path for the Cowboys to swoop in.
Perine is a good dual-threat back who had 455 receiving yards in 50 catches last season with the Broncos. He also rushed for 238 yards and averaged 4.5 yards per carry. He is a proven veteran who could excel as an RB2 behind Dowdle. For the low price of a late-round draft pick, he is certainly worth consideration.
