Jerry Jones' Disastrous 2023 Offseason Trade Still Haunting the Cowboys
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys are off to an up-and-down start to the season after a similarly frustrating offseason. One of the biggest talking points for Cowboys fans was the running back situation over the summer and that continues to be the case two weeks into the season.
After the departure of Tony Pollard in free agency, the Cowboys brought back Ezekiel Elliott. Rico Dowdle and Zeke split RB duties and neither of them has been particularly impressive so far.
However, Jerry Jones has been delusional about the effectiveness of his rushing rotation as he recently said that he doesn't think there is any problem in the RB room.
A common criticism of Jones was the fact that he didn't select a running back in the 2024 NFL Draft. The recent play of this rookie running back class makes that criticism even more pertinent.
On social media, Pat Thorman pointed to the running backs drafted in the fourth round. The list includes Bucky Irving who is off to a good start in Tampa Bay and Braelon Allen, who had a breakout showing in Week 3 against the Patriots.
Cowboys Could Have Drafted RB Braelon Allen If Not for Trey Lance Trade
The frustrating part is that the Cowboys could have selected Allen or any of the other young rushers had they not traded their fourth-rounder for Trey Lance in the 2023 offseason. That pick became the 124th overall pick, landing ahead of where all of these running backs were drafted.
A year later, Lance has yet to make his Cowboys debut. Despite all the talk over the summer about him impressing, he is still the third-string quarterback behind Cooper Rush.
The fact that Jones still says he doesn't regret that trade is concerning. It means that he is not willing to admit his mistakes and learn from them. More than the deal itself, that is perhaps the bigger worry for Cowboys fans going forward.
