Despite an offseason full of drama, the Dallas Cowboys are back on track. Not only do they have Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb paid and happy, but they also started the season with a massive road win against the Cleveland Browns.

However, the Cowboys didn't make the highest-paid player in NFL history to win regular-season games. They paid him to help them get over the hump and win a Super Bowl. In fact, Jerry Jones made that very clear in his latest remarks during an interview with 105.3 The Fan. Jones brought up Troy Aikman, who won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys in the 1990s, and highlighted his hope that the Prescott deal ends up like the extension he gave to Aikman.

"I will say this, any time that we've ever made players the highest-paid player -- key players, such as Troy Aikman, the highest-paid player in the game -- we've won Super Bowls."

There is one big difference between the two situations. Jones gave Aikman a contract extension that made him the highest-paid player in the NFL after his rookie deal. But, he had already won back-to-back Super Bowls by then. He followed it up with another title in 1995, making that lucrative extension absolutely worth it. Aikman made $27.4 million in base salary and $17.85 million in bonuses throughout his Cowboys career.

Prescott's postseason track record is certainly not as impressive as Aikman's. He is 2-5 in the playoffs, including underperforming significantly in winnable games.

This is a huge leap of faith by Jones in his star quarterback. It is an understandable one as Dallas didn't have a good way of replacing Prescott if he left in the 2025 offseason. However, if the motto is Super Bowl or bust, Prescott may be facing an uphill battle with a ton of pressure on him. How he fares under that remains to be seen.
