Jerry Jones Walks Back Inflammatory CeeDee Lamb Comments
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb have been embroiled in an endless drama this offseason with the star playmaker still holding out with a request for a new contract. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones received significant backlash over the weekend for suggesting that there is no "sense of urgency" to get a deal done.
With the start of the regular season less than a month away, not having one of your best players in training camp would be an "urgent" issue for most teams, after all.
Jerry Jones must have realized this as well as he walked back his comments before the Cowboys' first preseason game against the LA Rams.
Cowboys News: Jerry Jones Walks Back CeeDee Lamb Comments
Admitting that he "got in trouble" for his earlier remarks, Jones provided a clarification for what he meant. He said that Lamb would not be suiting up for this game anyway, so there wasn't a sense of urgency. Jones specifically addressed the All-Pro receiver and told him that he was missed.
This is an attempt at damage control by Jerry Jones & Co. His earlier statement was bizarre to begin with and the organization noticing and addressing that is a good sign.
Cowboys fans have to hope that this isn't too little, too late. Lamb already deleted all mentions of Cowboys from his social media and has been actively combative towards Jones online.
This is obviously a business and Lamb would presumably take the deal if the Cowboys made him the highest-paid receiver in the league. Jones may have changed his tone in the media but has been playing hardball all offseason. Unless he changes his tone in contract negotiations with Lamb, this drama may not end any time soon.
