The Dallas Cowboys are getting ready for a crucial Thursday Night Football clash against the New York Giants in Week 4. They are desperately trying to avoid falling to 1-3 before they face the tough part of their schedule, with the Steelers, Lions, and the 49ers next up.

The biggest problem for the Cowboys has come on the defensive side of the ball. They have allowed 89 points through three games, the third-most number in the league. They have given up the most rushing yards and touchdowns to opponents and accrued the most penalties so far. New defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has failed in his role so far and has Cowboys fans missing Dan Quinn.

Things took a turn for the worse on Wednesday. The Athletic's Jon Machota reported that two key defenders are doubtful to suit up in Week 4. Rookie cornerback Caelen Carson and safety Markquese Bell didn't practice this week, officially putting their status in jeopardy.

Cowboys News: Caelen Carson & Markquese Bell Doubtful for Thursday Night Football

Carson had taken over as the starting corner opposite Trevon Diggs in the absence of DaRon Bland who is currently on the IR. The Cowboys don't have the elite secondary depth they did last season after the team parted ways with veteran Stephon Gilmore in the offseason. If Carson can't go, it will be CJ Goodwin or the newly acquired Andrew Booth Jr. filling in for the rookie.

Bell, on the other hand, has mostly been used on special teams so far, only appearing in nine defensive snaps. His absence will be felt less as long as Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker are ready to go. However, this is not the news Cowboys fans were hoping for when the defensive unit was already struggling to start the season.
