The Dallas Cowboys had a drama-filled offseason. Against all expectations, they retained Mike McCarthy, lost key veterans, and refused to give contract extensions to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

Micah Parsons, similar to his teammates Prescott and Lamb, is also expecting a lucrative, long-term contract but Jerry Jones & Co. are playing hardball with all three stars. There was speculation all summer about Parsons wearing out his welcome in Dallas, opening the door to trade rumors.

Amidst all this drama, however, the expectations are still sky-high from Micah Parsons. In fact, oddsmakers still consider him the favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Parsons leads the field at +550 odds, followed by T.J. Watt, Nick Bosa, Maxx Crosby, and Myles Garrett.

Parsons being the favorite demonstrates the ridiculously high bar he has set for himself. Even though the Cowboys are expected to take a step back and Parsons is going up against elite defenders in their primes like Bosa, Garrett, and Watt, who have won the award in recent years, he has still managed to separate himself.

Despite the fact that Parsons has never won the award, he has been in the top three in the last three years. Over this span, he has more sacks (40.5) than anybody in the NFL. If he were to put together another double-digit sack season and the Cowboys were to maintain their elite defense, Parsons has an excellent opportunity to take home the trophy.

Hopefully, this contract drama hasn't caused a rift between Parsons and the Cowboys. Dallas can't afford to lose a star defender of Parsons' caliber.
